PRINTABLE COPY
FIRST WE SAVE, THEN WE PAY

THE HOME IS THE FASTEST AND BEST PLACE TO CONSERVE IN YOUR DAILY LIFE, KEEP YOUR HOUSE BRIGHT BUT ULTIMATELY LITE...

Savings –

Replace your old CRT computer screen - $1.50 a month
Use Hibernation Mode on your Computer - $5 a month
Smart Power Pads are just smart - $1 - $3 a month
Is Solar a Viable Resource to tap at Home? – Pay back in 5-10 years
Use space heaters to heat separate rooms - $10+ a month
Replace your old appliances with new ones - $5 - $10 a month
New Home are now ENERGY STAR compliant - $5 - $10 a month

Replace your old CRT computer screen: The old monitors waste a great deal of electricity turning on as well as staying on. If you have one of the older large monitors, be sure to turn off the screen when you are not using it. Otherwise go out and buy a LCD monitor for your computer. Save $20 a year.

Make your computers sleep when you are not using it: When you are not using your computer, turn the computer to Sleep/Hibernation mode. This will conserve energy.  Hold off from shutting down the computer all the way, the start-up, depending on the type of computer can be more expensive in ways of electricity then just making it sleep. Save $59 a year.

Smart Power Pads are just smart: Use energy pads, power strips, and surge protectors. These electrical pads can also be called Smart Pads. Smart because you can connect a great deal of Electrical Appliances to the pad, and at night you only have to flip one switch to turn off all of you appliances.  Though these electronics only use minimal amounts of electricity while they are off, they still use electricity when you are not using them and electricity should be completely cut off when not being used and that is what these Smart Pads are for.

Is Solar a Viable Resource to tap at Home: Yes and No.  Solar power is only a viable resource for your home when you live in a location that is sunny 90% of the time. It is well known that solar panels are not as efficient as they should be in order for everyone to buy but it is increasing efficiency everyday and if you live in the right area it is the best way to save on money and energy.  If you have the money to buy Solar Panels and it won’t set you back, then it doesn’t really matter where you live, it will always save you money, but you won’t make your money back for a great deal of time.  We suggest anyone that can afford it to actually purchase solar panels, to save energy and to be more self-reliant. If you live in an area that has 95% sunshine year round, we suggest for you to buy these panels. They will pay you back in about 5 years in this case and if you try to sell the house, you will make it back in 2-3 years and the sale of your home.

Use space heaters to heat separate rooms: Heating a house is the most expensive use of energy, both gas and electricity.  If you do not have a super efficient furnace and control zones within your house, the best way to heat your home is to figure out a low temperature around 66 degrees and place space heaters in the rooms that truly count and the rooms you will be in.  If you spend most of your time in the Family Room, place a space heater there and turn it on when you are watching television.  Space heaters have become super efficient and only need to heat up specific areas and not the whole house. Save $152 a year.

Replace your old appliances with new ones: When looking for a new fridge, oven, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, or dryer.  Always look for a high efficient appliance.  Compare the energy stickers to know which appliance is more efficient compared to size not options.  Options are nice but the more options you have, the more energy you use, unless that option is ENERGY STAR.  This new type of classification will be displayed on a yellow tag and will compare this unit to others its size and options. Look for the appliance with the least amount of electricity used per year. Save $50 - $100 a year.

New Home are now ENERGY STAR compliant – If you are in the market for a new home, find out if the house you are interested in is ENERGY STAR compliant. This certification has only been available since 2000 and most houses were still not certified after that point.  If the house you are looking for is ENERGY STAR (ES) certified, you know that a third-part ES company has come out during different points of construction and made sure all exterior walls and cavities have been sprayed and insulated, that the house’s furnace, water heater, and circulation will be efficient.  If you have an ENERGY STAR house, you are surely to save $50 - $100 a year in energy savings.  These houses are air tight and have great circulation and efficiency.
