Know the location of your Main Shut-Off: Make sure all adults and teenagers know where the main shut-off valve is.  This is most likely found in the basement near the front of the house or in the mechanical room. If you cannot find it, have a plumbing professional look for it.  In case of an emergency and water begins to leak into your house, you will want to shut the water as fast as possible.  This could save you a few $1000 dollars worth of repairs, so look into this as soon as possible and teach you older kids what to do in case of emergencies.

Check for leaks by watching your water meter: Turn off all the water in your house, go out to your water meter and see if the meter is running. If the meter is running even a small amount means you have a leak and that could waste thousands of gallons of water and hundreds of dollars on your water bill. Repair dripping faucets with new washers. Drips will affect your water and sewer bill, and will make you need to drain your septic system if you have one.

Use isolating valves to shut-off individual appliances: This is more for new construction or additions, but this also helps shut off an individual appliance and could save money to shut off one appliance instead of the whole house if there is a leak or another problem.

Repair leaks and drips as soon as possible: If your sink gets clogged and that leak/drip accumulates a lot of water, it can overflow and flood your bathroom, sink, or other connecting rooms.  Also each drip is money being flushed down the drain.

Insulate pipes and your Hot Water Heaters/Tanks/Boilers: Insulate all of your hot water pipes in your house; this will help deliver all the heat in the water to the designated faucets and showerheads.  Also insulate all hot water heaters, tanks, and boilers to help from freezing and help keep all heat within the tank or boiler.

Research your Plumbing Professional: Make sure your plumbing professional has insurance for anything they might break or not do correctly.  A non-professional doing your plumbing can cause great loss in water, energy, time, and money. If you want to do a small project in your home and have any questions, forget the questions and get a professional to do the work.  This way you will not make a small project into a large problem/project.
