Cooling with your Swamp Coolers: There’s not much you can do to keep your swamp cooler running efficiently except running it the way instruction manual tells you.  When the temperature outside is not too hot run the swamp cooler without water, blowing air from the outside into your house and increasing circulation.  When the temperature increases, turn on the water pump. The water will cool down the water you are taking from the outside and increase the humidity inside your house.  This will cool you down while it is on.  The sad part is that most swamp coolers are located in one area of the house and cool down there first.

How to Direct Airflow from a Swamp Cooler: Make sure anytime the swamp cooler is on, there is at least on window or door open slightly to increase airflow. Also if you want to direct the air from the swamp cooler, most of them have flaps you can close and open to direct the airflow.  Make sure these are pointing in the direction you want more air to flow.  Then open the one window or door in that vicinity.  This will direct all cold air in that direction.

Swamp Coolers can also be assisted with Fans: You can also add a little more circulation with the use of fans.  The swamp cooler still needs to stay on so if the temperature is okay with the circulation from the swamp cooler alone, don’t worry about the fans. Just remember how to direct the swamp cooler’s airflow.

Problem with saving money with Swamp Coolers: The great thing about swamp coolers is that they use ½ the electricity of an AC unit, but you also have to add in the cost of water, which isn’t much.  The problem with swamp coolers is that they always have to be cool to keep the house cool. They do not turn off when your house hits a designated temperature.  They are also not as comfortable as AC units especially since they introduce humidity into the house.
