 CONSERVING AT WORK

FIRST WE SAVE, THEN WE PAY

WORKSPACE IS THE SECOND FASTEST & BEST PLACE TO CONSERVE FOR YOUR COMPANY, WATCH HOW MUCH YOU CHEW OFF...

Replace your old CRT computer screen: The old monitors waste a great deal of electricity turning on as well as staying on. If you have one of the older large monitors, be sure to turn off the screen when you are not using it. Otherwise go out and buy a LCD monitor for your computer. Save $20 a year.

Make your computers sleep when you are not using it: When you are not using your computer, turn the computer to Sleep/Hibernation mode. This will conserve energy.  Hold off from shutting down the computer all the way, the start-up, depending on the type of computer can be more expensive in ways of electricity then just making it sleep. Save $59 a year.

Smart Power Pads are just smart: Use energy pads, power strips, and surge protectors. These electrical pads can also be called Smart Pads. Smart because you can connect a great deal of Electrical Appliances to the pad, and at night you only have to flip one switch to turn off all of you appliances.  Though these electronics only use minimal amounts of electricity while they are off, they still use electricity when you are not using them and electricity should be completely cut off when not being used and that is what these Smart Pads are for. These will also keep your computers and expensive electronics safe in case of a power surge in your office, especially those that happen while you are away.

Recycling is more than something to do at home: Recycling is even more important in an office.  Placing a recyclables bin in your office is one of the greatest way to conserve that you can do in your office.  Office can use hundreds of pounds of paper everyday.  By recycling these pages will save hundreds of trees a year and will keep your trash low and morale up. After recycling, buy green paper in your printers. This gives purpose to printing.  Also consider going digital.

Digitalize you paperwork: Besides just recycling, if you digitalize your paperwork, you can cut your paper use in half if not more.  Green paper is still not as efficient as no paper at all.  Use programs such as Microsoft Office and PDF Files to display and transfer paperwork over the Internet and e-mail. Reviewing paperwork on the screen helps save paper, saving money, saving trees, and helping the environment.

Conserving within your kitchen: There are so many things you can conserve with in your office kitchen.  Teach your employees to conserve water.  Place a recycle bin in your kitchen.  Buy supplies for your office kitchen that are conservative and has non-toxic materials in them.  Buy appliances in your kitchen that are ENERGY STAR compliant.  Plug in all of your appliances into a Smart Energy Pad so you can turn off all electricity before you leave at the end of the day.

More work less space: Make you office cubicles a little smaller.  This helps with not having to expand into other offices and using utilities within both offices. Smaller spaces also makes use of less lights for more cubicles.  This also allows for less cubicles for the same amount of electricity, heating/cooling, gas, lighting, and every other type of utility.

Greening you commute: If you can, help your office support commuting, public transportation, and Alternative Modes of Healthy Transportation.  Ask you boss to have your office participate in rewarding commuting.  Have them put together groups and reward them with, helping pay for gas, drawings, and other rewards as incentives. Your office can participate with city programs to help pay for employees use of public transportation, this partnership with the city can help with low fees and other incentives from the city. Alternative Modes of Healthy Transportation promotes a healthy workforce and lower insurance fees.  Companies are given reduced insurance fees, incentives for employees, and other beneficial incentives to entice the company to entice their employees to work out and lose weight. Did you know, American workers spend an average of 47+ hours per year commuting through rush hour traffic, that’s 23 billion gallons of gas wasted just to get to and from work.

Green sleevesTry green clothing.  Not color but clothing made of organic and recycled material. These are now in fashionable styles and help the environment from saving resources.

Work from Home: Digital commuting can be an efficient way to work on projects, save money on commuting, and help save the environment.  Instant Messaging, video telecom conferences, online classes, and other telecommuting is the wave of the future.  You can do your work while in your pajamas.  This saves the company time and money to help pay for commuting and office space.  There are now 44 million employees in America now working from home and telecommuting.

Use Green Materials: Use green paper that has come from being recycled including newspaper, newsletters, paper, envelopes, refillable pens, paper, markers, and other stationary material. Buy biodegradable soaps that are natural, these can be cheaper and easier on the hands. Use recycled paper and cloth towels in your bathrooms. Use natural, non-toxic cleaners and janitorial supplies.  Buy bulk to cut down on packaging waste. Refill you ink cartridges or recycle/exchange your cartridges to lower the cost of new ones.

Educate your Employees to bring lunch in reusable containers: Using reusable containers to carry your lunch saves money on purchasing lunches and saves money on plastic zip lock bags.  Reuse these containers if possible to lower on dishwashing.  Bring reusable utensils and cloth napkins to help on minimum trash.  If you have food delivered, order with many of your co-workers to have one delivery. If you go out, walk or bike to the restaurant instead of driving.

Help your company get into the mood: Talk to your boss, company owner, and colleagues about getting in the mood of conserving and recycling.  Convince your boss of the great benefits of doing this and help change your office to be green. This will save them money by conserving and recycling. This way they can pay to offset their travel emissions and pay for carbon emissions for the utilities they use.  By doing all this, they can claim being a green company and so be on the top of many consumer’s lists. They can make extra money from a group of people they could never have thought off tapping into in their wildest dreams.  Some people only shop and work with companies that are green, you can’t lose.  Also by offsetting the emission in making their products they will show they care for the environment and those people will send their business your way. Encourage corporate financial investment in green products, companies, and banks. All of these things combined will open doors into a new group of people who have a great amount of money to spend; remember they already conserve and have the money to buy your product.

Renewable Resources: Suggest to your company to purchase renewable sources of energy. Ask your energy provider if they have a green power program that will benefit your company.

Green you companies building: First off, replace all of your lights that are not fluorescent to compact fluorescent and regular fluorescent lights. This will make a great impact on your energy bill and on the environment.  If you can, install Solar Panels on top of your building.  Having solar panels on a flat roof increases the energy production by a huge margin.  You can also purchase solar water heating, install motion detecting bathroom, kitchen, and storage lights, green roofs, greywater storage, recycling, permeable pavement, and low flow toilets.
