WHAT IS THE WORLD DOING TO ABOUT ALTERNATIVE ENERGY?:
If we can tap into alternative resources we can begin to decrease our fossil fuel consumption. If we do that, each country will be able to keep all their own production. Consider this, countries that consume so much fossil fuels such as the United States will begin sharing their output with other countries, making them reliable on energy output they produce. Think of it, all countries dependant on their own resources to energize their citizens. We are not yet close enough to start moving away from fossil fuels but as we integrate this new technology into our lives slowly and steadily, the economy will stay strong and the people around the world will be able to integrate together.
As you will read, even the companies that sell fossil fuels are looking for new alternatives. This is their only way to stay afloat when we finally transition in to Alternative Energy Technology.

The more sources of energy we have, the less influence any one of them, such as oil, has over the United States' security and prosperity. Renewable energies are some of the most promising new sources for energy because they are clean and because their supply can be regenerated. The Washington International Renewable Energy Conference brings together government, civil society, and private sector leaders to address benefits and costs of the global deployment of renewable energy technology. |
We’ve inaugurated our first wind power project in Asia.
The 40 megawatt (MW) facility is located within the Dhule wind farm in central-west India some 200 miles north east of Mumbai.
The project will produce sufficient clean electricity to eliminate the production of approximately 70,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, compared to a conventional coal-fired power project.
The electricity has been sold under long-term contract to the local Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited. |

In December, President Bush signed the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007, which responded to his "Twenty in Ten" challenge in last year's State of the Union Address to improve vehicle fuel economy and increase alternative fuels.
- The Renewable Fuels Mandate will increase the use of renewable fuels by 500 percent – requiring fuel producers to supply at least 36 billion gallons of renewable fuel in the year 2022.
- The Vehicle Fuel Economy Mandate specifies a national mandatory fuel economy standard of 35 miles per gallon by 2020, which will save billions of gallons of fuel and increase efficiency by 40 percent.
- The Lighting Efficiency Mandate will phase out the use of incandescent light bulbs by 2014, and improve lighting efficiency by more than 70 percent by 2020.
- The Appliance Efficiency Mandate sets over 45 new standards for appliances.
- The Federal Government Operations Mandate will reduce the energy consumption of Federal Government facilities 30 percent by 2015. Additionally, all new Federal buildings will be carbon-neutral by 2030.

The BP Solar business became profitable for the first time in 2004 after rapid growth and streamlining. Today, we work in around 160 countries with 20 offices in our key markets. Our work includes everything from designing and manufacturing solar electric systems, through to marketing them to people, businesses and industries. |

Geothermal energy is created by the heat of the earth. It generates reliable power and emits almost no greenhouse gases.
This is how it works: When groundwater seeps below the earth's surface near a dormant volcano, the water is heated by reservoirs of molten rock, usually at depths of up to 9,800 feet (3,000 m). Wells similar to those used to produce oil and natural gas are drilled to recover the water. Once captured, steam and hot water are separated. The steam is cleaned and sent to the power plant. The separated water is returned to the reservoir, helping to regenerate the steam source. |

Chevron is the largest private producer of geothermal energy in the world, accounting for more than half of all privately developed geothermal power. Our geothermal operations started more than 30 years ago when we discovered Darajat, a major field in Indonesia. We have three other important sites for geothermal energy production in our portfolio: Gunung Salak in Indonesia and Tiwi and Mak-Ban in the Philippines.
Combined, the four Pacific Rim sites generate 1,273 megawatts of geothermal energy. The energy produced by our Indonesia sites produces enough energy to supply approximately 3.9 million homes in the area. In the Philippines, Chevron geothermal power supplies 7 percent of the electricity needed by Luzon, the country's largest island and home to 48 million people. |

Solar energy is the radiation from the sun that reaches the earth. Using photovoltaic cells made from silicon alloys, sunlight can be converted into other forms of energy, such as heat and electricity. Solar cells can convert up to 22 percent of sunlight into electricity. Steam generators using thermal collectors to heat a working fluid can also produce electricity. |

Chevron is investing across the energy spectrum to develop energy sources for future generations by expanding the capabilities of today's alternative and renewable energy technologies. Chevron has invested more than $2 billion on developing alternative and renewable energy technologies and in energy efficiency services since 2002. We expect to spend more than $2.5 billion in these areas between 2007 and 2009.
Examples of recent Chevron projects that use solar power include the largest solar installation at an institution of higher learning in North America, at the Contra Costa Community College District in California. Chevron Energy Solutions, a Chevron subsidiary, is installing a 3.2-megawatt system comprising photovoltaic panels mounted on 34 parking canopies at three campuses. The project is the highlight of a multifacility energy-efficiency and solar program that is expected to save the district more than $70 million over 25 years. |

Chevron has experience in constructing, operating and maintaining energy systems in challenging marine environments. We're researching areas in which we may be able to integrate ocean energy technologies into our operations. One day, ocean power could have a dramatic impact on our offshore operations and serve as an important enabling technology.
Ocean power is just one of the renewable energy sectors in which Chevron is investing to help expand and diversify the world's energy supply. |
