GLOBAL WARMING - SOLAR VARIABILITY
WE ARE CARETAKERS OF THIS EARTH
DISCLAIMER: As you know, Carbon Blueprints is dedicated to accuracy and truth. This site is allowing this discussion, of which each "fact" must be backed up by research and accurate data, in order make sure we know what is true, what is myth, and what is a lie.

WHAT IS SOLAR VARIABILITY?:
Solar variability, also known as the change in Solar Activity, refers to the increase or decrease of movement and release of solar energy/heat from the outer layers of the sun. The energy/heat from the sun increases and decreases like the seasons, but unlike the earth, these seasons are years long instead of only a few months. Astronomists say that the end of a cycle has just completed (2007) and a new cycle is just beginning to start but the winter months of 2008 have shown some hesitants to restart.

Carbon Cycle

Some of this activity consists of releasing solar flares, which can be very small to large bursts of energy coming from the surface of the sun. This burst of energy contains different chemicals, gases, as well as flames of different degrees of heat/energy. When a solar flare jumps off the surface of the sun it sends an energy wave into outer space. These solar flares move through space and bounce off or through different planet's atmospheres. When it hits the surface of the earth's atmosphere you may be able to see what is most popularly known as the Northern Lights.

The discussions, as reported below, have been whether this solar activity has influenced the climate here on earth. According to Duke University there is a good possibility of the sun's activity effecting the earth climate change. There are still small unknowns within their research because the movement of the air in the lower atmospheric layers of the earth are so complex and turbulent. Research does show that there is a direct correlation between times that the temperature rises here on earth and the amount of solar flare activity that happens around the sun. The American Institute of Physics reports that "for the large part variations in global temperatures are beyond our control and are instead at the mercy of the sun's activity."

NASA reports that solar activity has increased by .5 percent since the late 1970's. Again as with Duke's report, there are unknowns. These unknonw are due to time limitations and just need more time to monitor because the technology to monitor these activities only came out in the last 40 years. If this trend seems to continue through the 21st century then it will be reported that solar variability has a direct correlation with earth increase in temperature.

There is also discussion on the other side that says that the measurement's are wrong and that there is no way to tell that these studies are true because of so many unknowns. Those defending this theory of solar activity directly effecting the earth's climate change have also shown reports that Mars is going through the same ice melting activity on that planet as we are here on earth but without the human activity to magnify it.

NATURE.COM - Sun not to blame for global warming.

(PARTIALLY CONFLICTED BY DATA, FULL PARAMETERS NOT WRITTEN ABOUT)

Sun not to blame for global warming. A study has confirmed that there are no grounds to blame the Sun for recent global warming. The analysis shows that global warming since 1985 has been caused neither by an increase in solar radiation nor by a decrease in the flux of galactic cosmic rays

A recent study by researchers at Duke University and the Army Research Office has found new evidence of a link between solar flare activity and the earth's temperature. The work is another contribution to the ongoing debate over global warming and its causes. A strong link between solar flares and our climate, if it exists, could override the influence humans have on the temperature of our environment. One of the challenges of determining the connection between solar flare activity and the atmosphere stems from the fact that the motion of the air that blankets our planet is turbulent and complex. A sudden burst of solar activity would, in effect, be smeared out by moving air and its interaction with the earth's surface. Any temperature increase caused by a given period of solar flare activity would be difficult to determine, at best. Rather than focus on such challenging one-to-one correlations, the new study compares the form of the statistical fluctuations in solar flare activity with the form of the statistical fluctuations of the earth's temperature.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND - Study says that original Science Paper written about Global Warming and Solar Activity is flawed.

(FACT/CONFLICT - That Science Paper he speaks of may have been flawed but the recently independent labs around the world have reported that Solar Flares do effect climate change through new data and technology)

In 1991, a Science paper reported a remarkable correlation between solar activity and temperatures, prompting speculation that solar activity was causing global warming. 1 While the paper understandably received a great deal of attention at the time, and is sometimes cited today, its conclusions are flawed.2 The original 1991 analysis compared temperature data to records of sunspot cycle length (a proxy for solar output). However, the sunspot data used in the analysis were not uniform—some were filtered to smooth out temporal variations and others were not. Subsequent analyses (by these same authors) attempted to address the filtering issue but were
plagued by mathematical errors. When the analysis was repeated without these errors, the relationship between solar activity and temperature fell apart.

In fact, a comparison of the mathematical coefficients that describe the fluctuations suggest to the researchers that the atmosphere directly inherits its temperature fluctuations from the variation in solar flare activity. Unless some other underlying cause is responsible for the unlikely correspondence between solar flares and the earth's temperature, the research suggests that for the large part variations in global temperatures are beyond our control and are instead at the mercy of the sun's activity.

In what could be the simplest explanation for one component of global warming, a new study shows the Sun's radiation has increased by .05 percent per decade since the late 1970s.

The increase would only be significant to Earth's climate if it has been going on for a century or more, said study leader Richard Willson, a Columbia University researcher also affiliated with NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

The Sun's increasing output has only been monitored with precision since satellite technology allowed necessary observations. Willson is not sure if the trend extends further back in time, but other studies suggest it does.

"This trend is important because, if sustained over many decades, it could cause significant climate change," Willson said.

Since the late 1970s, the amount of solar radiation the sun emits, during times of quiet sunspot activity, has increased by nearly .05 percent per decade, according to a NASA funded study.

"This trend is important because, if sustained over many decades, it could cause significant climate change," said Richard Willson, a researcher affiliated with NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies and Columbia University's Earth Institute, New York. He is the lead author of the study recently published in Geophysical Research Letters.

"Historical records of solar activity indicate that solar radiation has been increasing since the late 19th century. If a trend, comparable to the one found in this study, persisted throughout the 20th century, it would have provided a significant component of the global warming the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports to have occurred over the past 100 years," he said.

Simultaneous warming on Earth and Mars suggests that our planet's recent climate changes have a natural—and not a human-induced—cause, according to one scientist's controversial theory.

Earth is currently experiencing rapid warming, which the vast majority of climate scientists says is due to humans pumping huge amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Mars, too, appears to be enjoying more mild and balmy temperatures.

In 2005 data from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor and Odyssey missions revealed that the carbon dioxide "ice caps" near Mars's south pole had been diminishing for three summers in a row.

Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of space research at St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, says the Mars data is evidence that the current global warming on Earth is being caused by changes in the sun.

"The long-term increase in solar irradiance is heating both Earth and Mars," he said.
